Truncation

You can truncate textwords to find words with different endings. The symbol for truncation is usually * or $ depending on the database and interface.

Search for:
smok* in search box to demonstrate truncation

This search will retrieve articles containing any of the words smoking, smoke, smokes, smoker, smokers etc, as below.

exert about nicotine replacement therapy

Textword searching is particularly useful for including synonyms and similar concepts, and new or rare topics. The disadvantage is that you may pick up some irrelevant articles, where the word is just mentioned in the text, but is not the focus of the article.
