There are two ways of searching most databases - textword searching and thesaurus searching.

Textword searching means that you type words into the computer and the databases searches for occurences of those words in the records it holds. If your word appears in a document, it counts as a "hit".

Search for:
"smoking" as a textword is typed into a search box

In this example, records containing the exact word smoking will be retrieved from the database,as below.
