Summary

The four part structured question

Consider the following scenario: a 55 year–old male asthmatic patient visits you on a follow–up from two previous visits where you found his blood pressure to be high. You have advised him to cut down on his salt intake, which he has done. This time, however, his blood pressure is still high (165/100 mm Hg) and you decide to begin talking about drug therapy for reducing his hypertension. You explain that there are two main options for reducing hypertension: ACE inhibitors or diuretics. Normally, diuretics would be preferred as the first line of treatment since they are usually better tolerated, but your patient asks whether ACE inihibitors have a better chance of preventing coronary heart disease.
